History
The 42d Communications Squadron was activated as the 1292 Airways and Air Communications Service Squadron on 15 July 1955 at Loring AFB, ME. From this key position at the tip of Maine the 1292 Airways and Air Communications Squadron was one of American most important eyes and ears guarding the United States of America from Soviet Attack. The communications squadron manned the Air Traffic Control Tower and RAPCON and where critical to the success of the 42d Bomb Wing’s strategic bombing mission. Over time the communications squadron underwent many name changes as size and scope of responsibilities grew. They were redesignated the 2192d Communications Squadron on 1 Jul 1961; 2192d Information Systems Squadron on 1 Jul 1984; 2192d Communications Squadron on 1 Nov 1986; 42d Communications Squadron on 1 Sep 1991. After the end of the Cold War Loring Air Force base was looked at for BRAC closure. Finally on 30 Jun 1994 the 42d Communications Squadron was inactivated with the rest of the 42d Bomb Wing only to be activated a few months later on 1 Oct 1994 at Maxwell AFB, AL as part of the newly activated 42d Air Base Wing. |
| Over the years the 42d Communications Squadron has seen the old enemies become new allies, seen the advent of the new technologies like the internet and witness the evolution of America’s air power. As our emblem proudly states we are “The Critical Link”! |
